iPhone Review | Trivial Pursuit: I’m full of useless knowledge!
by Jaden Walker
Released: April 23rd, 2009
Developer/Publisher: EA Games
Verdict: Buy It!
Pros: Great translation, beautiful graphics, pass-and-play multiplayer.
Cons: Some questions are in the wrong categories.
Do you know what the primary metal in bronze alloys is? Do you know what sport Notre Dame is not part of the Big East Conference in? Do you know how long the Golden Gate Bridge is? If so, you’re as full of useless information as I am, and you probably are a big fan of the board game Trivial Pursuit.
Following the the footsteps of another great game, Monopoly – which came to the iPhone last year – Trivial Pursuit brings a perfect translation of the board game to a very portable platform. At $4.99, it’s not a terrible price for what you get.
What can I say about Trivial Pursuit that hasn’t already been said? The goal of the game is to move around the board and collect a wedge from each category of questions, then answer a random question in the middle. Your turn doesn’t end until you get a question wrong, allowing some serious smug points when you’re on a roll. The game allows for a few really good house rules that you can toggle on and off to keep things nice and fresh.
One of my favorite parts with the game is the three different play options. You can play against a computer (only one, which I hope they change in a future update), you can play on a local wi-fi with a friend who has their own copy, or you can choose pass-and-play which lets you play with up to four players on one iPhone/iPod Touch. The last one of those worked out great, as I love playing with my fiancé as we’re laying in bed at the end of the day. Those are some seriously heated games that we wouldn’t be able to play if we both had to buy a copy.
The only complaint I have is that some of the questions seem to have fallen into the wrong categories. I saw questions about movies like Star Wars and Spirited Away in sections like Science & Nature. It really throws you for a loop when you’re on a subject you’re good at and get a curve ball like that thrown your way. I’m sure there will be an update to fix that down the line, though.
Overall, the is one of the best board game translations I’ve seen since Monopoly, and is a must have for just about anyone. If nothing else, it will fill you with loads of useless information that’s fun on trivia night at the bar :)
