iPhone Review: Wordulous

Wordulous

Developer/Publisher: 99Games
Genre: Word Game
Price: $0.99
Verdict: Word-based fun that’s worth a look at.
Pros: Very simple to get into and perfect for playing in short doses
Cons: Does it really offer anything unique to the already full word game genre?

Wordulous is one of many, many word-based games on the App Store. So what does it offer to make it stand out from the crowd? Simplicity. The concept of the game is incredibly simple. You have to create as many words as possible by tapping on the letters provided within the time limit and to earn as many points as possible. Wordulous offers a practice mode, as well as an examination and challenge mode, the latter two being the ones you’ll most likely stick to.

Wordulous In Game

Examination mode guides you through a number of rounds where you create as many words as possible. At the end, you are given a bonus round with a usually quite simple question to answer to gain more points. Challenge mode provides similar gameplay but you can play up against your phone contacts or your Facebook friends. Wordulous isn’t difficult to get the hang of at all, although obviously having English as your first language is rather crucial! You can set the game to either providing 6 letters or 7 letters to create words and the only limitation is your vocabulary. You can progress through the rounds by just creating 3 letter words but the longer words provide the higher scores which means you can progress faster.

Overall, Wordulous is good fun. It’s by no means very sophisticated but it does exactly what you would expect and want from a word game on the iPhone. At $0.99 it is perfectly priced. You may not play Wordulous constantly for hours but you will undoubtedly return to it regularly, whenever you have five minutes to spare, making it well worth a look.
