Chillingo, iPhone publisher extraordinare, gave us an early look at two of their upcoming titles, Super Shock Football and Underground, which we’re delighted to share with you, because sharing is caring!
Super Shock Football is based off of the classic electric football games, where a bunch of little football players were on a board that would constantly vibrate and move the players around. While electric football has taken a backseat to our fancy high-tech technomologic football games, just like fashion, electric football looks to be on its way back, just as I hope Members Only jackets will soon be. Super Shock Football takes an old-timey, leather helmets look, with a bunch of teams like the Burglars, who have burglar bandannas around their eyes. Frankly, you don’t need to play as any other team, as they stole my heart right away. And not in the Mola Ram style of heart-stealing, either.
While the gameplay is very chaotic by the nature of electric football, where you don’t know where anyone’s going to particularly go, you can influence the game in some ways – you can choose formations before each play and move around the players as you see fit. You can also pass the ball – which sounds like a real innovation, I know – but it’s a cool feature for electric football games, and the mechanic is easy to use, and you can also use it to lateral the ball, so your Cal v. Stanford dreams are soon to come true. The game is fully 3D (and recommends that you restart before playing, as it uses up a lot of resources) and you can twist and turn your device to view the action from pretty much any angle that your heart desires. Also cool is that if you have an iPhone, then you can make it vibrate like an electric football game while the game is going on, which promises to kill your battery, but will give you that real electric football action on your iPhone.
Next up is the graffiti-inspired shmup Underground, which we’ve finally gotten our hands on. The game has you apparently flying around subways as a graffiti can that has to shoot evil graffiti coming to life. It’s a shmup, the concept doesn’t have to make sense. You have 360 degree firing, and can move by either tilting your device (which works fairly well, especially as you calibrate it) or setting up touch controls. You can also fire in 360 degrees, but the shots come out kind of slow, so it’s not exactly an element that you have to master. This and getting used to some of the things like the graffiti that can kill you on contact painted on the walls of the train will confuse you at first, but the controls work well enough to have us keep on keeping on with this one.
Both of these games should hopefully be available in the App Store soon, and you can expect reviews on both of these games from us when they hit, so keep your eyes peeled for those. And if you don’t, then we’ll tell on you!
