iPhone Review: Roswell Fighter

Roswell1Game: Roswell Fighter
Developer: GameLab Innovation Center
Price: On sale for $0.99
Verdict: Good classic fun for the iPhone.
Pros: Looks good, auto saves what stage you were on, can be played in short bursts
Cons: Slow down issues, somewhat laggy responsiveness.

Roswell Fighter is an enjoyable River Raid or 1942 clone.  The game starts off with a fun little video pointing out Earth and an impending alien invasion.  Guns, bi-planes, falling meteors, and alien ships — what’s not to like!?!

The game takes a top down view.  Control of the plane can be done with a finger or by tilting the phone.  There is a calibration mode for those who wish to play via the tilt method.  I personally found that control handled best with the point and drag method.

The game looks good and holds that nice 1940’s feel.  Flying over streets, billboards, and crashed alien ships is done in glorious iPhone detail.  Blasting alien ships will yield stars, shields, two companion planes, and nukes.  Nukes, OH YEAH!!

The only complaint would be the slowdown.  Having more than five things on the screen shooting at you will cause some spits and stutters.  This makes it hard to dodge the bullets, or get out of the way of an alien craft.

There are small boss fights.  Taking out the Zeppelin is essential to saving our planet from the alien scum.  You will get to enjoy all this over nine levels (and one bonus level) of varying locations.

Overall this is a fun experience.  Hopefully a patch will come out to fix the slowdown.  But this is a definite must own for those fans of 1942.

Do you want to go all Will Smith style on the alien scum?  Leave us a comment below.  One lucky random commenter will get to live their fantasies out shooting down alien ships with a free promo code.  So get those Men in Black lines ready, just don’t shout them out at the bus stop while you’re playing.
