Gaming is generally regarded as the biggest breakthrough in new media of the last two centuries. It went from a niche hobby to a multibillion-dollar industry in just a matter of decades. For a form of media that’s less than 100 years old, it has truly exploded in popularity. It has also taken quite a few twists and turns in how it is delivered to players over that time. In this period, there have been quite a number of binge-worthy games that have graced our screens. With the ability to play games across generations on the latest consoles, it means that there is a bigger selection of games than ever before that are available to try right now. Have a look through the titles that we think will glue you to your console or PC.
Skyrim
We know, Skyrim is over 10 years old at this point. It’s not a new game. However, with rumors of a new Elder Scrolls game being released in the near future, it’s the perfect time to revisit The Elder Scrolls and play your way through Skyrim. With Bethesda recently trying out online games for The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, it will be good for players to get back to this world with the standard gameplay in place.
Skyrim is almost the definition of a game that pushes you to complete one more quest. The narrative is perfectly paced, the difficulty curve can be as lenient or unforgiving as you like and it’s just generally an incredible game. Whether you missed it the first time around or just want to get back into the series before the new release, Skyrim is definitely a game you should be looking to binge through soon.
Call of Duty
Call of Duty has a new release pretty much every year and on top of that, the main bulk of the game is played online. However, the fact remains that the single player mode in CoD is very much under-appreciated. There are excellent story modes in pretty much every version of the game and if you’re new to the series, it’s a great way to get used to the controls and gameplay before entering the unforgiving world of online play.
The guns of Call of Duty are also included in the single player mode, so you can work out which one is best for you without being blasted by more experienced players online. Binge through the single player campaign and that will give you the basic skills to start dipping your toe into the more competitive online arena.
Serious Sam 4
Serious Sam was seen as a Duke Nukem knockoff when it was first released, which is a hugely unfair label to tag it with. Serious Sam is actually a fast-paced, incredibly difficult and extremely fun first-person shooting game. It can be binged, as it is essentially more of the same all of the way through. With it recently being made available on Microsoft’s Game Pass service, you can get it without too much outlay if you have an Xbox.
This is an old-school shooting game that will blow your mind on each new level. Inventive enemies, exhilarating run and gun gameplay, and a fast framerate make this a game you have to take a look at – especially if you enjoy the classic shooting games such as Doom and Quake.
Prey
This is another game that’s available on Game Pass. It’s an intense, story-driven game that has a lot in common with Deus Ex. For anyone who is familiar with the stealth-em-up genre, this will certainly grab your attention right away. What’s so good about Prey is twofold – firstly, the story is excellent. It will draw you in right away and you will genuinely want to know what happens to the characters.
Secondly, you can choose how you play. The extra powers you can add to your character allow you to customize perfectly for your game playing style, which means that it lets you have the experience that you want. Prey is something of a forgotten classic and is well worth a weekend binge.
Chrono Cross
This is a remake that has been released much more recently than the other games on this list. Chrono Cross is a classic RPG that’s a sequel to the heralded Chrono Trigger. To put it simply, if you enjoy RPG titles then you have to play this game. Once you start, you won’t want to put it down.
